It's so strange how 1 incident could bare different reactions from different people. I can't say that I will write well or even tell the best story, but I can say that it's a true story. This is a story of 13 years old girl living on the street with her 12 years old sister, the 2 girls knew a gang of boys whom they stayed with, the boys ages ranged between 12 years and 17 years.
I just finished the session with the children and was thinking of a break, at this moment I found her waving for me to come over to her. As I approached her she pointed at her friends and complained to me in anger that the boys she is staying with were teasing her and wouldn’t stop. As usual I had to know why are they teasing her and how I wish I never asked her as this is what she told me.
"They are teasing me because they all slept with me against my will" she said. I heard this with my eyes and mouth wide open in disbelieve, I was speechless. "And all that is bothering her is they are teasing her" I thought to myself.
Again I ask her " And y did they do that to u, aren't they your friends and u all are staying together".
She answered " Yes, but yesterday the guy called 3am Selim who has raped me a couple of times before, tried again yesterday, so I told him that I would like it better if he paid me 5 pounds and he agreed". She then looked at me and said " Well he will rape me again he is a big and old guy so I said to myself y can't I get something out of it. So when the boys knew what I did, they told me that they are not pimps and they decided to punish me and so they slept with me against my will one after the other and now they are teasing me about it and they just won't stop."
After I heard from her, I went to speak to the boys in a separate room and surprising to me they did not deny, they actually confirmed it and their excuse was she should have known that, as she is staying with them she shouldn’t have acted this way and she made them seem as pimps and they can't accept that.
I decided to take legal action and the person who stops me is the girl and she said that she will not go anywhere or say anything and she was totally wrong to act as she did and she rejected any of my words, when I tried to explain to her that there is no excuse for what they did. At the end of the day she left with them after she reconciliated with them.
Is self-perception the only reason that makes us accept or not accept a certain condition? If this is it, then how does this girl see herself? , what does she think of herself? Does she think she deserves any assault she faces? And are we going to leave her to continue evaluating herself in this manner?
This girl still laughs, plays and fights, she can still do all that, she is still living. I know many people who faced weaker incidents and they have lost the will to live. Strange is this life, there are people who have almost everything an average person would ask for but can't stop complaining about anything and there are people who hardly have their basic rights and you can hardly hear them complaining, they are busy surviving.
